5 Ways To Prepare for Entrance & Scholarship Exams During the School Holidays

As the summer school holidays approach, it's a critical time for students to recharge, but it's also an opportunity to prepare for upcoming entrance and scholarship exams. With the right balance of relaxation and strategic study, your child can set themselves up to be in the best position possible for their exam, whether that’s 2 months away, or 12.

Here are 5 ways to help your child prepare for an entrance or scholarship exam over the school holiday break:

1. Create a realistic study schedule

Balance is key here - when scheduling study time (whether that be workshops, practice exams or home study), make sure students have time to relax and recharge in between. Downtime can help improve mood and boost performance, so it's just as important as study time. Hendersons workshops run for half days (approx. 3.5 to 4 hours), and we strongly recommend only taking one workshop per day, to avoid overloading and allow students important time to relax and reset.

2. Parents: prepare yourself!

Parents play an integral role in the learning journey of their child, so it's important that you know where and how to target your efforts and guidance in their studies. At the end of each Hendersons' workshop, 15 minutes are dedicated to providing parents with an overview of what has been covered and recommendations for continued preparation. Utilise this information to guide your child's studies at home, whether it's engaging in dinner conversations about current affairs or practising mathematical concepts with flashcards. Your support plays a pivotal role in fostering a positive and effective study environment.

3. Use Bonus Materials

After each day of a workshop, students are provided with bonus materials that include practice prompts, questions and problems that help them to practise applying key skills and knowledge. Encourage your child to use these bonus materials to prepare for their scholarship or entrance exam. To take this to the next level, you could set time limits for your child to help them practise under time pressure, just like they will experience in the real exam.

4. Book in practice exams

Practice exams provide the opportunity to practise skills under test conditions, giving your child an opportunity to apply their knowledge to questions modelled from the real exam they will sit. At Hendersons, we also provide a comprehensive feedback report after practice exams that includes expert teacher feedback on written pieces. You can use this to help work out where your child needs to focus their studies to prepare for their scholarship or entry exam.

5. Seek feedback

Actively seek feedback from teachers or tutors to pinpoint areas for improvement. Use this feedback to focus your child's studies. For example, if your child needs to improve their writing skills, Hendersons' Essay Correction Service, provides an opportunity to get individualised feedback on pieces of writing from an expert teacher. This feedback will not only correct errors, but also provide suggestions on what students can do next time to improve the quality of their writing.

The summer school holidays present a unique opportunity for students to make productive use of their time and prepare for upcoming exams. By combining effective study techniques, using bonus resources and leveraging feedback from entrance and scholarship practice exams, your child can take significant steps towards preparing for their exam.

If you're travelling over the break, Hendersons offers workshops online too, so your child doesn't miss the opportunity to keep up their preparations.
