Robert
Allwell and Associates format
This company prepares exams
for a small number of schools. They do have a similar format
to ACER (SST) with only one writing piece. They substitute the
opinion writing piece with general abilities testing.
Their format is as
follows;
Written Expression
Mathematics
Reading Comprehension
General Abilities
Our HES exam preparation workshops offer your
child techniques that will assist them in performing at their best
on the day.

Allwell & Assoc exam papers
Written
Expression The writing component looks at the students
ability to present their relative thoughts through writing. The
main aim is to assess the content, structure and expression
of the written piece. The student are given 25 minutes to write
their piece.
The Robert Allwell and
Associates websites states that the “…test assesses students’
facility with written language. A stimulus is provided for students
to produce a piece of writing in a particular genre (e.g.
narrative, exposition or argument) depending on their Year
level.”
It must be noted that from
past experience, companies have sometimes provided an opinion or
analytical question for written expression. We recommend that to be
prepared for the written expression of a scholarship exam, you
should also undertake our opinion writing workshop to prepare for
any unexpected topics.
Mathematics The aim of this test is to assess
both curriculum related mathematics as well as mathematical
reasoning (problem solving). Approximately 45 minutes for 60
questions.
Reading Comprehension
This is a
paper requiring inferential skills to interpret written text,
generally non fiction (about 45 minutes).
General
Abilities This paper comprise the components of
numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning similar to general IQ
tests. 75 questions in about 45 minutes.
Numerical
Reasoning - a half-day course to teach our techniques
to solve problems using numbers. These tests include missing
numbers, worded problems and logical reasoning.
Verbal Reasoning - a half-day course to
teach our techniques to see the relationships and solve problems
using words and language, including verbal analogies, synonyms,
antonyms and logical reasoning.
Abstract Reasoning - a half-day course to teach our
techniques on how to attack and solve these puzzle type
papers.

Writing
-We have two
programs. They are called Write Creatively and Write to
Inform (EACH is two half days).
Write
Creatively- our emphasis here is on the structure of an
essay, the use of expressive language and the way to respond to an
illustration or other visual prompts.
Write to
Inform -
our emphasis here is on the organisation of this type of essay, the
use of effective language and the way to express a point of view
.
Mathematics (two half days). We focus on Maths
problem solving and exam technique. These workshops are not
about training in the basic processes of Mathematics.
Students entering for Scholarships should already be proficient at
Maths.
There are two stages in
solving any problem.
o
Analysis – what is this problem really about? What data
does the question have which may help solve it?
o
Strategies – the skills that will help to solve the
problem.
Reading Comprehension
A half
day course to teach students the skills of inferential reading, as
well as how to interpret maps, diagrams, charts, and
illustrations.
Verbal Reasoning A half-day course to teach our
techniques to see the relationships and solve problems using words
and language, including verbal analogies, synonyms, antonyms and
logical reasoning.
Numerical
Reasoning A half-day
course to teach our techniques to solve problems using numbers.
These tests include missing numbers, worded problems and
logical reasoning.

Creative Writing
- Our
emphasis here is on the structure of an essay, the use of
expressive language and the way to respond to an illustration or
other visual prompts. We have a two session course for three
hours each (three full essays written and corrected.)
Opinion Writing
- Our emphasis here is on the organisation of
this type of essay, the use of effective language and the way to

We have a two
session course for three hours each (three full essays written and
corrected.)
Mathematics
- Over
nearly twenty years we have gathered from students information
about the style of questions used in the exams
-Our course is four
sessions for three hours – either in the morning or the
afternoon.
Reading Comprehension
- A one-day
course (9:15am – 3:15pm) to teach students the skills of
inferential reading, as well as how to interpret maps, diagrams,
charts, and illustrations. To select from answers which include
partly correct answers, common errors of reasoning and
misconceptions requires students to analyse the text quite
closely.
Numerical Reasoning
- a half
day course to look with students at the skills that Numerical
Reasoning tests are examining. Numerical Reasoning Tests
measure the degree to which people can work comfortably with
quantitative concepts.
Verbal Reasoning
- a half day course to look with the students
at the skills that Verbal Reasoning tests examine. This paper looks
to examine the students’ ability see relationships between words
and solve problems using language. It includes verbal analogies,
synonyms, antonyms and logical reasoning.
Abstract
Reasoning - a
half-day course to teach our techniques on how to attack and solve
these puzzle type papers.
Practice Exams
- are
fundamental to our program. Every practice exam comes with
complete performance analysis with detailed explanation for every
answer. We provide you with the most authentic testing
experience outside of the actual exam. Results are handed
back to students and parents within 15 minutes of the conclusion of
the exam with written explanations.
