Selective entry academic
schools provide an educationally enriched environment for
academically gifted students who are also high
achievers.
There will be four selective
entry high schools in Victoria for students in Years 9 to 12 in
2011:
Mac.Robertson Girls' High (taking 225 girls)
Melbourne High (taking between 308 and 336 boys).
Nossal High School, situated in Berwick (taking 200).
Cory High School will be situated in Wyndham. (first Yr 9 class in
2011) (taking 200).
Their main year of entry is
Year 9. They have an entrance exam where the Year 8 students’
aggregate score is ranked amongst his/her peers. An
acceptable standard in all sections of the exam is
required.
Students who go through the
selection process are almost always committed to working hard and
to feel proud of good school achievements.
Melbourne High and
MacRobertson Girls’ High School, until 2010, were Victoria's only
select entry schools.
The Education department uses
a centralised selection process to admit students to all selective
entry schools for the 2011 school year. The common entrance
examination will be undertaken by eligible students in the second
week of June 2010.
Generally, eligible students
are those who are in their second year of secondary school at
government or non-government schools (usually Year 8), who are
either Australian citizens or who have permanent resident status or
an appropriate visa. When enrolling, you need to indicate
your choice of schools, in order of preference.
The evidence of past years is
that between 2500 and 3000 students will sit the exam.
Hendersons Educational
Services has been preparing students for the select entry exam for
over twenty years. We offer workshops that facilitate and
teach techniques to give able students the chance to perform at
their best on the day. The current Hendersons
workshops and
Practice Exams run on weekends and schools holidays leading
up to the June exam.
If you are seeking to gain
entry to these high schools you should start preparing NOW.
Such preparation will certainly increase your chances of
success in that exam but, of much greater importance, you will also
start on the road of self-education and taking responsibility for
your own learning.
